Austin Birding Club
Austin sits on a major migration flyway, and you have probably walked past a hundred birds without ever noticing them. Each Saturday morning we meet at a different park or stretch of greenbelt and spend a slow hour or two learning to actually see what is around us. Someone in the group always knows a few more birds than you do, and within a few weeks so will you. No experience needed, just a willingness to be up a little early.
What you'll do
- Meet for an early Saturday walk at a different Austin park or greenbelt each week.
- Learn to spot, name, and listen for the city resident and migrating birds.
- Keep a shared list of everything the group finds across six weeks.
Schedule
One walk every Saturday morning for six weeks, starting early while the birds are active. A different spot around Austin each week.
Vibe
Quiet, unhurried, and a little nerdy in the best way. Early risers welcome.
Good to know
Do I need binoculars or any gear?
Not to start. Come as you are for the first walk; if you get hooked, a cheap pair of binoculars is all you ever really need, and someone usually has a spare to lend.
I cannot tell a sparrow from a wren. Is that ok?
Perfect, that is most of us at the start. The whole point is learning to see them, week by week.
Where exactly do we meet?
A different park or greenbelt around Austin each week. The group shares the exact spot and start time over a group text before each walk.
Group instructions
This club coordinates over iMessage or SMS groups. When a group fills up, you'll be added to a group message along with the other members of the group and a community organizer.
